[Click] Drawing compound elements

Hello,

Does someone know a way to draw compound elements in metapost? In Eddie 
Kohler's PhD thesis there is an example of such a figure at page 36. 
I have found one example in the etc/diagrams folder but that is just an 
enlarged queue, not really what I am looking for.
