Also you can try and change the "root=" tag in grub.conf || lilo.conf to
the full path "root=/dev/hdb3" or wherever your root fs resides. On my
Redhat 9 box I also got the "Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root"
error after a new vanilla kernel was added, the above settings sorted it
out for me.

Pedro,

It looks like you are not using the proper configuration options in the
"make 
menuconfig" step.  Probably you have not turned on the configuration
option that 
supports your hard disk (sdb3).
