I recently also needed some DHT implementation to evaluate my research.

My experience with the implementations is that all is a bit hard to 
deploy and to start to use. You _won't_ be able to achieve one totally 
functional, doing some basic operations (put/get) and etc, in a few days 
of work.

So my recommendation is that you reserve a good amount of time (some 
months) looking for all implementations before start to put you own 
adventure on it.
