I was born and raised in Concord, California, all the way up through the summer after my graduation from Concord High School in 1998. During that time I bowled a lot, played trombone in the school band, played guitar in a number of garages, ate at Denny's many a time, had a paper route for the Contra Costa Times, made a lot of sandwiches at Togo's, memorized all the US presidents and the dates they served, and wreaked general havoc around town. I also made a concerted effort to never see the movie Titanic, and thus far I have been successful.
After graduating first in my high school class, I moved an entire 30 miles away to begin an undergraduate career in Computer Science at UC Berkeley. I spent my four years as an undergrad sleeping in, slaving over various projects, interning at IBM Almaden Research Center in the Storage Systems Department, doing undergraduate research, and playing in the greatest trip metal band of all time, Old Core. In the Spring of 2002 I graduated with a Bachelor's of Science in Electrical Engineering & Computer Science, Highest Honors, with a minor in Creative Writing. And what did I do to celebrate my newly gained freedom from Berkeley?
I decided to stay at Berkeley for another year, to do some "post-baccalaureate" work (read: unable to find a real job and not ready to apply for grad school yet) with Professor John Kubiatowicz and the OceanStore group. I concentrated mainly on the development of the Tapestry structured peer-to-peer overlay, but was also known to work on a little bit of everything.
In the fall of 2003, I moved out to Boston, MA to start making my way toward a Ph.D. in Computer Science at MIT. I work in the Parallel & Distributed Operating Systems group, with Frans Kaashoek. I will probably be there for a long, long time. Also, I play guitar in a rock band.
In the spring of 2005, a project/hoax I worked on got a lot of press coverage.
