[Click] Bonehead userlevel compilation question

I feel like an idiot asking this since I have already got click working, 
but when trying to compile click in userlevel mode - im getting a compile error:

in /CLICK-DIR/
#autoconf - OK
#./configure --enable-userlevel --disable-linuxmodule OK
#gmake all - craps out at linking step where it cannot find click.o in
the ./userlevel/ directory

I am using click tarball 1.4.3 - on a 2.4.20 kernel.  Note that I
already have successfully compiled it to run as a kernel module but I
want to make it at userlevel instead.

Anyone have any idea why click.o hasnt been put into the userlevel
directory? Ive called gmake all in that directory as well but nothing
happens
