Hi Yihong,

(1) You should use the CVS version, especially since we're going to release a 
new stable version probably this week.  Yes the CVS version is updated more often.

(2) Our patches are made to be applied to stock kernel.org kernels.

(3) Yes, Spinlock is a kind of mutex.
