maybe the config could accept descriptions, like: ``byte 1 = 5, short 3 
= 67000'' or something, that allows you to set bytes, chars, and 4-byte 
vals.  alternatively, you would want 3 different els (SetByteAnno, 
SetShortAnno, SetLongAnno).
