This could conceivably be a problem.  If you download a snapshot from 

    http://pdos.csail.mit.edu/chord/snapshots/

you can skip the ./setup step and avoid potential problems
from using versions of automake/libtool that we don't.
You can also try using a more recent snapshot (preferably
the most recent) if you don't have a requirement for using
the 2006 one.
