PAN: Developing a Practical Active Network

Project Abstract
Traditional computer networks are static: processing occurs only at
fringe nodes and intermediate nodes route packets to their
destinations without any processing. The increasing diversity of
network applications has created a demand for ``active networks.'' In
an active network, processing occurs within the network.
Active networks face the serious challenge of needing to
simultaneously address safety, security, and interoperability issues
while still providing the high performance that today's networks
demand. The PAN project aims at developing a prototype "Practical
Active Network" that will eventually address all of these issues
simultaneously. The current implementation of PAN focuses on
providing a high performance testbed for experimenting with
active networks. Safety, security, and interoperability issues
are not yet fully addressed. However, they were kept in mind during
the design and will addressed in a future version.

- A source
code snapshot (dated 1998.08.19) is available but is totally unsupported. This code will
only compile with Redhat 4.2. I am
unable to answer any questions about the PAN source code snapshot at this time. Use at your own
risk.
